On this day, May 22, in 1859, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Best known for his iconic creation, Sherlock Holmes (who first appeared in a short story in 1886), Doyle was originally a medical doctor, writing stories and working on novels between patients. Interesting tidbits: he was knighted in 1902, possibly more for his support of the UK’s role in the Boer War than for his literary work; his thirst for justice led in part to the establishment of the Court of Criminal Appeals; he became a Spiritualist partially due to his belief in fairies; and he was a good friend of Harry Houdini (although they had a later falling out). He died at age 71 from a heart attack.
