On this day, November 12, in 1815, Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born in Johnstown, New York. An icon in the early women’s rights movement, her
Declaration of Sentiments, written in 1848, became the cornerstone of the women’s suffrage efforts in the United States. Also an avid abolitionist, she was one of the few in the women’s rights movement who was also involved with women’s parental custody, property, employment and income rights, and rights surrounding divorce and birth control. She died of heart failure in New York in 1902, eighteen years before the passage of legislation giving women the right to vote.
