On this day, July 13, in 1918, Marcia Brown was born in Rochester, New York. She grew up during the Depression, and at first thought of becoming a doctor but decided instead to become a teacher and later, a writer. She wrote and illustrated over 30 children’s books, with her illustrations being awarded three Caldecott gold medals, and six silver medals – the most of any single illustrator. (The Caldecott award is given out by the American Library Association for that year’s “most distinguished American picture book for children.”) In 1992 she received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award from the ALA for her lasting contribution to children’s literature. She died in 2015 at age 97.
