On this day, July 23, in 1888, Raymond Chandler was born in Chicago, Illinois. He didn’t start writing until age 44, when he lost his job as an oil company executive during the Great Depression. He is credited with being one of the founders of the hard-boiled school of detective fiction; six of his seven novels were made into movies, starting with 1939’s The Big Sleep. Other famous works included Farewell My Lovely and The Big Goodbye. He wrote a few very notable screenplays, including Double Indemnity (with Billy Wilder) and Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train (even though he and Hitchcock often clashed). He died in 1959 of complications from pneumonia; he was 70.
