So I was tooling around on Facebook last night – something I do far too often – and I was getting pissed. I know that I’ve pretty much created my Facebook feed by liking certain posts and following certain pages, so what shows up has been geared to what I’ve established as things I want [….]

On this day, September 16, in 1926, John Knowles was born in Fairmont, West Virginia. He is best known for his 1959 novel, A Separate Peace, which is one man’s reminiscences of his youth at prep school under the pall of World War II. While not autobiographical, the school in the novel is based on the Phillips Exeter Academy which the author attended in his youth (one of the main characters was based on Gore Vidal, a classmate of Knowles). While he wrote 25 other works, none reached the same popularity as A Separate Peace. Knowles died in 2001, at age 75.
