This past week, over at the blog Isak, a 2010 review of William Styron’s Lie Down in Darkness was suddenly getting a lot of traffic. A bit of investigation by Isak’s creator, journalist and writer Anna Clark, led to the discovery that Styron’s 1951 novel, his first, is the latest film project by Scott Cooper (“Crazy Heart”). As the casting begins, actresses like Kristen Stewart and Jennifer Lawrence are vying for a part in the 1950s family saga, namely that of Peyton Loftis, described in Clark’s review as “beautiful and intelligent and doomed.” Though hopefuls might want heed Clark’s caveat: reports are inaccurately naming Peyton as the main character, but that would in fact be her father, Milton Loftis, the alcoholic, embittered lawyer.
