The Books We Wished Had Sequels

by Tee Tate
Before I Go to Sleep is author S. J. Watson’s debut novel. It was a bestseller before_i_go_to_sleepbefore it was was even out in the mass market, and now the book is currently in the process of being made into a movie starring Nicole Kidman. I borrowed the book from a friend. Among all the great books on her bookshelf, Before I Go to Sleep really stood out. I read all 358 pages in two days, even though I had to stay up until 4 am the first day. For a while, I’d only been reading nonfiction. Before I Go to Sleep made me fall back in love with fiction.

I don’t want to spoil the ending, but, as great as the ending is, it did leave quite the cliff hanger. I would love a sequel just to see if the main character’s new life does work out, if she really has overcome the problem she’s been dealing with throughout the book.

Sharon, I’m so glad I’m not alone in my “no sequels necessary” opinion. There are lots of things I wouldn’t mind reading more of (like your Tolkein example), but I don’t feel the need for it.

I’ve always wished for a sequel to Mockingbird but now I’m not sure I want it!
