On this day, October 11, in 1925, Elmore Leonard was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Considered one of America’s premier crime writers (in 2012 he was presented with the National Book Award’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution for his lifetime of work), many of his works, such as Get Shorty, Out of Sight, 3:10 to Yuma and Justified have been adapted for film and television. Also known in literary circles for his 2007 nonfiction book, 10 Rules of Writing, Leonard died in 2013 due to complications from a stroke suffered earlier in the year. He was 87.
