Deadline is reporting that science fiction author Harlan Ellison has died at the age of 83.

From a family friend, Christine Valada via twitter:

Susan Ellison has asked me to announce the passing of writer Harlan Ellison, in his sleep, earlier today. ‘For a brief time I was here, and for a brief time, I matter.’ – HE, 1934-2018. Arrangements for a celebration are pending.

Reowned for his prolific writing including 1969’s post-apocalyptic A Boy and His Dog, Repent Harlequin’, Said the Ticktockman, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, A Boy and His Dog,
as well as screenplays for the original Star Trek episode “The City on the Edge of Forever,” and 1980s Twilight Zone reboot and Babylon 5, Ellison was considered by some to be as blunt and controversial as he was talented.

Over the course of his sixty-year career, Ellison won five Nebula awards, eight and a half Hugo awards, two World Fantasy awards, 18 Locus awards, four Writers Guild of America honors, two Edgar Allan Poe awards, two George Melies Fantasy Film awards and  six Bram Stoker awards.

No cause of death has been released to the public.
