LitStaff Pick: The Best Books We Read This Year

Some Assembly Required – A Journal of My Son’s First Son by Anne Lamott

It’s difficult to choose just one book to name the best book I’ve read this year. There have been so many. But one of my favorite authors is Anne Lamott, so I choose a book she released earlier this year called Some Assembly Required – A Journal of My Son’s First Son.With her usual wit and wisdom, the author takes us through the first year of her grandson Jax’s life, beginning with the shocking news that her unmarried nineteen-year-old son Sam was unexpectedly going to become a father, and culminating with Jax’s first steps and a birthday party. Through personal journal entries, letters, emails, and phone conversations with Sam and the baby’s mother Amy, Ms. Lamott invites us into their lives and we witness the upheaval, joy, and jumbled up emotions a new baby can bring into the lives of a family.

Now I can’t wait to read Lamott’s most recent book, Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers. It’s on my Christmas wish list!
