LitStaff Pick: Our Favorite Subversive Fiction

Little Brother
Cory Doctorow

Imagine a world where your mundane life is turned upside down by a terrorist attack.  Imagine that you happen to be caught near ground zero, and in that single moment, life as you know it will never be the same; that you will become a suspect, a fugitive and finally a revolutionary attempting to preserve the freedom and liberty on which you were raised and in which you believe.

In this cautionary tale of power gone awry, the “bad guys” are not terrorists, but the Department of Homeland Security.  And the hero isn’t some hard-nosed investigative reporter or steely-jawed off duty cop – he’s a nerdy, unassuming high school kid.  Most unsettling is that the events in Little Brother are eerily familiar – and frighteningly possible.
