LitStaff Pick: Our Favorite Speculative Fiction

NASA’s successful Curiosity rover landing got us thinking about great SciFi or “speculative” fiction. These are the stories so convincing in their descriptive worlds that sometimes we forget they are set on other planets or in a time separate from our own. Of course, not all speculative fiction concerns outer space and realms of varying origins. Sometimes the best speculative fiction comes in the form of stories of the mundane, or at least, stories of normal consequence. The Green Mile, for instance, gave us a historical journey into the racial injustices dealt to a gentle, innocent, magical man. In any event, speculative fiction, premise fiction, magical realism, these are the stories that have our imaginations soaring, keep us guessing right to the very end and that are so influencing, so sincere that the supernatural or alien becomes an aside, a mere celebration of writers gifted with sublime talents.

What about you, LitStackers? What’s your favorite speculative fiction? We want to hear from you!

  1. Elisha I went through the same thing when I first read Dune – very difficult to get into, but soooo worth it!
