LitStaff Pick: Our Favorite Opening Lines

Stephen King

Favorite opening line? That’s easy. It comes from Stephen King’s 1986 novel IT.

The terror, which would not end for another twenty-eight years-if it ever did end-began, so far as I can know or tell, with a boat made from a sheet of newspaper floating down a gutter swollen with rain.

Such an innocuous, innocent picture. A paper boat floating innocently down a rain swollen gutter. An image totally out of context with the terror the reader is about to be made witness to. Georgie’s boat…a helluva way to start a story.
