Our Favorite Fictional Friends

I’m going to go all Middle Earth with this topic, because I think friendship is explored pretty uniquely in Tolkien’s masterwork, with plenty of buddy-duos and an ultimate friendship that, arguably, enables the entire story to turn out hunky-dory in the end.

If you are looking for a friend for fun and nonsense, for sharing common interests and enjoying life together, what better choice than Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took?  Mischievous, playful, curious, yet stalwart and true, you’d want Merry for the brilliant plans and Peregrin for the heart and daring.  Never a dull moment with these two hobbits around.

And don’t forget characters like Legolas and Gimli, who ended as compatriots after the events in Return of the King and eventually went away together to spend the rest of their days in the undying lands.  Talk about Best Friends Forever!

But without a doubt, I think we’d all love to have a Samwise Gamgee in our lives.  That friend that sticks with you through thick and thin, who’s always got your back and who will carry you when you fall.  Would Frodo have saved Middle Earth without Sam?  Thankfully, we never had to know, but if there was one fictional buddy you had to have in a pinch it would definitely by Samwise.
