On this day, December 6, in 1886, poet Joyce Kilmer was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. A prolific poet whose works extolled the beauty of nature, as well as his Roman Catholic faith, his reputation, was on the rise when he was tragically cut down at age 31 by a sniper’s bullet in World War I. His legacy is now a simple, sweet poem, “Trees”, which begins with “I think that I shall never see/A poem lovely as a tree” and concludes with “Poems are made by fools like me,/But only God can make a tree.” Not a bad legacy to leave behind.
