On this day, September 25, in 1952, author, feminist and social activist Gloria Jean Watkins – better known as Bell Hooks – was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. (Her writer’s name is taken from her maternal great-grandmother, whom she greatly admired, and kept lower case to distinguish herself from her relative as well as to signify that her writing is the “substance of books, not who I am.”) Author of over 30 works, many cited as significant to gender and racial rights, her 1981 work, Ain’t I a Woman?: Black Women and Feminism, is considered a seminal work in the feminist movement. Today, she turns 66.
