As book lovers, we don’t really understand the purpose of censorship. We certainly don’t banned-books-eyechartsupport an effort to ban any books because we believe that readers should be able to judge for themselves the appropriateness of a given book.

But sometimes, even the best books are pulled from the shelves. Some of the following were banned for the purported “messages” they supposedly sent to young minds. Some, because they were deemed “inappropriate.” Whatever the reason,  the following banned books may shock you.

We encourage you LitStackers to celebrate banned books by picking up a copy of those “taboo” books from your library or indie bookseller. Be sure to tell us your thoughts on these surprisingly banned books in the comments below. We want to hear from you!
