How did Joss Whedon celebrate the end of shooting on “Marvel’s The Avengers”? By getting a bunch of friends together at his house and adapting the William Shakespeare play “Much Ado About Nothing.”

Shot in October of 2011 over the course of 12 days, Whedon’s “Much Ado About Nothing” brings together some of his frequent collaborators — Amy Acker, Clark Gregg, Nathan Fillion, Alexis Denisof, Fran Kranz and Reed Diamond — for a modern-day take on Shakespeare’s comedy of mischief and love that uses the play’s original dialogue.

“At first it was just fun. He likes to do stuff like that. He likes to have people over and do Shakespeare readings,” Kranz told HuffPost Entertainment last year. “He and his wife are constantly hosting. You go to his house and there are always people there. I would never be comfortable with having a movie shot at my house but he embraces it. So I think it started as one thing and now it’s this movie that people are asking about. I’m like, “I just got an email to come over one day.” Now it’s turned into a thing.”

The “thing” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of last year. Lionsgate picked up “Much Ado About Nothing” and set the film for release on June 7.
