Graduate student Autumn McShane has had her share of heartbreak. She’s been abandoned and betrayed and she lost her beloved mother in a tragic car accident five months ago. That loss damaged her body and fractured her spirit but she’s learning to recover, until her ex-boyfriend returns to town, intent on making her life miserable.
Declan Fraser hates her ex as much as Autumn does, but the last thing she needs is to put her trust in the hands of another man, especially one like Declan: his hard body and lulling Irish accent makes more than few girls weak-kneed. The talented rugby player is rude and sarcastic, with tattooed, muscular arms and a cocky attitude, but he’s the only one who can help Autumn win an ill-advised bet that, if lost, could cost her more than she’s willing to pay. The reluctant alliance between Declan and Autumn stirs up cravings she doesn’t want to admit, but Declan is a hard man to resist.
Just when Autumn starts letting down her carefully constructed walls to the sexy bad boy, he betrays her when she needs him most. Autumn suspects Declan has secrets, and she is determined to uncover what drove him away from her, even if that means fraternizing with the enemy. But will the truth return Declan to her arms or add to the scars on her heart?
I have not read any books from the New Adult genre, but if Eden Butler’s debut novel is an example of the quality of work this genre is producing, then…I Like It!
Set in the fictional college town of Cavanagh, Tennessee, Chasing Serenity tells the story of graduate student Autumn McShane and her growing love for Irishman Declan Fraser. The two lovers don’t initially start on good terms, but eventually become friends despite their mutual attraction. Autumn is focused on finishing her studies, rather than have a relationship and Declan is the man who seems to be the one obstacle in her way. Not that Autumn and Declan don’t try hard to fight their desires for each other, neither of them are just not very good at it. As she discovers more and more about Declan, Autumn soon realizes that he is not the average rugby jock, like her ex-boyfriend Tucker, and that he is actually a good match for her. As always, the course of true love never did run smooth and Autumn and Declan experience a number of stumbling blocks on their way to happiness.
Butler’s strength in Chasing Serenity is her characters. I really, really, liked Autumn. She is sarcastic, and witty, and smart and takes ownership of her life. In her relationship with Declan, she is not passive, always waiting for the guy to make the first move. Numerous times in the novel she confronts Declan about their relationship because she is unwilling to be the girl who allows one person to have the power in a relationship. Autumn has complete agency in this novel and fights for her happiness. I found her point of view extremely refreshing and one that reflects the modern woman, specifically of that age group.
Lastly, the writing in Chasing Serenity is beautiful. I’ve never been to Tennessee, never really had a desire to, but after reading this book I want to visit. The descriptions Butler gives of Tennessee in the fall is so lush with detail that I could hear the water of the river Autumn runs by. One of my favorite descriptions is when Autumn is describing a memory of her father and fireflies. Butler’s words brought magic to the scene and I was transported to a moment of nature’s beauty. The way Butler describes the college town and her surrounding landscape, Cavanagh almost becomes a character itself as the season changes from fall to winter, as Autumn’s relationship changes with Declan.
If you’re curious about the New Adult genre and want a good read, Eden Butler’s Chasing Serenity is a good place to start.
Eden Butler is an editor and writer of New Adult Romance and SciFi and Fantasy novels and the nine-times great-granddaughter of an honest-to-God English pirate. This could explain her affinity for rule breaking and rum. Her debut novel, a New Adult, Contemporary (no cliffie) Romance, “Chasing Serenity” will launch October 2013.
When she’s not writing or wondering about her possibly Jack Sparrowesque ancestor, thinking up impossible plots, Eden edits, reads and spends way too much time watching rugby, Doctor Who and New Orleans Saints football.
