Author Shoutouts George Gordon Byron

An Author Shoutout to Lord Byron, born George Gordon Byron in London, England, he is renowned as a flamboyant writer and a prominent figure of the Romantic movement. Recognized as one of the greatest British poets, his life was characterized by extravagance, a pursuit of sensual pleasures, and numerous scandalous romantic involvements, notably including an affair with his half-sister.

He died at the age of 36 due to a violent fever in Greece, where he is still honored as a national hero. He was renowned for his extensive poems Don Juan and Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, as well as the shorter poem She Walks in Beauty.

Author Shoutouts Walter M. Miller

Science fiction writer Walter M. Miller, Jr., hailing from New Smyrna Beach, Florida, deserves an Author Shoutout. Known for his multitude of short stories, it was his renowned novel, A Canticle for Liebowitz, that brought him fame. This post-apocalyptic masterpiece, which won the prestigious 1961 Hugo Award for best science fiction novel, remains an enduring gem within the genre.

He was widely known for his reclusive nature, never granting a face-to-face meeting with his literary agent. Tragically, he took his own life in 1996, shortly after the passing of his wife. He was 76 years old.

Writer Edith Wharton, born in New York City, deserves an Author Shoutout. She made history as the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1921 for her work The Age of Innocence. Additionally, she received nominations for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1927, 1928, and 1930. Wharton’s unique writing style brilliantly combined her intimate knowledge of America’s privileged classes with a natural wit, resulting in humorous and incisive novels and short stories that offered profound social and psychological insights.

Additionally, she gained recognition as a significant influencer in fashion and published multiple books focusing on topics such as horticulture and home decor. At the age of 75, she passed away due to a stroke in Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt, France.

Author Shoutouts Virginia Woolf

An esteemed Author Shoutout to Virginia Woolf, a renowned writer, who hailed from Kensington, Middlesex, England. Her tranquil upbringing took a somber turn in 1895. Her mother passed away, leaving Virginia motherless at the tender age of 13. This unfortunate event marked the onset of her numerous mental breakdowns, which afflicted her for the remainder of her life.

A renowned modernist of the 20th century, she possessed exceptional lyrical writing skills. Although married to a writer, it was her sharp wit, connection with London’s progressive literary community, and advocacy for feminism that propelled her to fame. She tragically ended her own life at the age of 59 through drowning in 1941.

Author Shoutouts Philip Jose Farmer

Philip José Farmer, born in Terre Haute, Indiana, deserves an Author Shoutout. This acclaimed science fiction writer, winner of the Hugo Award three times, gained fame for his innovative combination of existing literature with his own original creations. Notably, he penned a novel under the pseudonym Kilgore Trout, a fictional author created by Kurt Vonnegut. Additionally, Farmer holds the distinction of being the first to explore the theme of sex within the genre.

He professed to have aspired to become a writer since the fourth grade. Eight decades later, he was honored with the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement and was bestowed the title of the 19th Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America. His passing occurred in 2009 at the age of 91.

Author Shoutouts Lewis Carroll

An Author Shoutout to Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, commonly recognized as Lewis Carroll, born in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. He authored renowned works such as Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and Jabberwocky. Despite being the eldest among eleven siblings, he faced physical challenges including a tall and slender frame, a troublesome knee, partial deafness, a lifelong stutter, and weakened lungs caused by an early encounter with whooping cough. Nonetheless, he exhibited great talent as a student, albeit with a somewhat erratic approach to discipline.

He was not only a skilled mathematician, but also an inventor and professional photographer. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1898 due to pneumonia, barely two weeks before his 66th birthday.

An Author Shoutout to Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, also known as Colette, was born in Yonne, France. Throughout her life, she gained significant popularity as an author, known for her clever dialogue and fearless exploration of explicit and gender-defying themes. While she is often remembered today for her novel Gigi, which served as the inspiration for a stage play and a movie adaptation, Colette’s literary contributions span a much wider scope.

Known for her multiple marriages, relationships (with both genders), and her performances at renowned music venues like the Moulin Rouge (where her on-stage lesbian kiss with her current partner almost incited a riot), she gained fame for her colorful personal life. Respected in France, she passed away in Paris at the age of 81.
