Author Shoutouts Michael Moorcock

An Author Shoutout to Michael Moorcock born in London, England. Moorcock’s prominent creation, the enigmatic and multifaceted Elric of Melniboné, diverged significantly from the traditional Tolkien-inspired elves, leaving a lasting impact on contemporary fantasy literature. Additionally, Moorcock served as the esteemed editor of the British magazine New Worlds, playing a pivotal role in introducing the New Wave movement in science fiction during the 1960s and 1970s.

He has received prestigious lifetime achievement accolades from the British Fantasy Awards, the World Fantasy Awards, and the Bram Stoker Awards, in addition to being inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2002. Presently, he divides his time between Texas and Paris.

Author Shoutouts Brandon Sanderson

Fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson, born in Lincoln, Nebraska, deserves an Author Shoutout. His debut novel, Elantris, alongside his extensive Mistborn trilogy (which has since expanded to eight works and still counting), presents a distinctive depiction of magic intertwined with the lives of his characters. In 2007, he received the honor of being chosen by the late Robert Jordan’s widow to complete the Wheel of Time epic fantasy series. The concluding installment, A Memory of Light, was published in 2013.

Since then, numerous books have been published, which includes five books that were written during the pandemic. These books were funded through a Kickstarter campaign that managed to raise more than $15 million within the first 24 hours. The first of these secret novels, titled Tress of the Emerald Sea, was released in April 2023.

Author Shoutouts Kate Atkinson

Kate Atkinson, a native of York, England, deserves an Author Shoutout. She achieved recognition with her debut novel, Behind the Scenes at the Museum, which won the prestigious Whitbread Book of the Year award in 1995. Throughout her career, Atkinson continued to impress with highly acclaimed works such as Life After Life and A God in Ruins, both recipients of the Costa award. In 2022, she released the highly anticipated Shrines of Gaity. Additionally, Atkinson gained fame for her creation of the Jackson Brodie series, which was adapted into the BBC One series Case Histories. In 2011, her significant contributions to literature were acknowledged when she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the Birthday Honours.

Author Shoutouts Diana Athill

Diana Athill, a literary editor and author born in London, England, deserves an Author Shoutout. Throughout her extensive career spanning over 50 years in publishing, she collaborated with renowned writers of the 20th century, including Philip Roth, Norman Mailer, John Updike, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean Rhys, Jack Kerouac, and Margaret Atwood, at Andre Deutsch Ltd, a publishing house she helped establish. While she initially began with the short story collection An Unavoidable Delay, it was her numerous memoirs that garnered her the most acclaim. In 2009, she was honored with the appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her contributions to literature. Sadly, she passed away at the age of 101 in 2019.

An Author Shoutout to Charles de Lint, born in Bussum, Netherlands, who is recognized as a Canadian author due to his family’s relocation to Canada when he was just four months old. Considered a pioneer of urban fantasy, de Lint’s writings often explore magical realism and mythic fiction, seamlessly merging the real world with the supernatural realm. With a vast bibliography comprising of over 70 books, including novels, novellas, and short story collections, de Lint has been honored with accolades such as the World Fantasy Award and the Canadian Aurora Award. Beyond his literary pursuits, de Lint is also a skilled musician and currently resides in Ottawa, Ontario.

An Author Shoutout to Donna Louise Tartt, born in Greenwood, Mississippi, who is recognized as an esteemed author. She grew up as the eldest of two daughters to parents who worked in a service station and as a secretary. After completing her studies at Bennington College, she gained widespread acclaim for her debut novel, The Secret History. One of her later works, The Goldfinch, published in 2013, achieved great success and was subsequently adapted into a film. Vanity Fair called Tartt a precocious literary genius when she was just 29 years old.

Stephenie Meyer, hailing from Hartford, Connecticut, deserves an Author Shoutout. She gained widespread recognition for her creation of the immensely popular vampire romance saga, Twilight. The series has achieved remarkable success, selling over 160 million copies. Despite lacking any prior authorial background, Meyer derived the concept for Twilight from a dream. Drawing inspiration from the literary works of Jane Austen and William Shakespeare, she skillfully crafted the inaugural volume, titled Twilight.

In 2008 and 2009, she achieved the status of being the top-selling author in the United States. Time magazine recognized her influence by including her on their 100 Most Influential People list in 2008. Additionally, she was acknowledged as one of the world’s most powerful celebrities in Forbes Celebrity 100 list of 2009. Apart from that, she has authored two novels for adult readers.
