On this day, April 2, in 1805, Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark. Author of such classic tales as The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Match Girl, The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Red Shoes, he is best remembered for his fairy tales but also wrote travelogues and novels, as well as plays and poems. He was a proud champion of “Scandinavianism” (celebrating the Nordic relationship of Sweden, Denmark and Norway), and he echoed his contemporary, Charles Dickens, in bringing to light the pathos of children caught in lives of poverty. Never married, and some say always unrequited in love, he died in Copenhagen in 1875, at age 70.
