Synopsis

To Chuito the apartment was a self-imposed prison for a lifetime of sins. To Alaine, the girl next door, it was salvation from her overbearing, religious father.

He was a devil.
She was an angel.

Two people who should’ve never met, let alone become friends, but it’s not until they give into the dangerous passion that’s been simmering under the surface for five years that things go to hell.

On the outside, Chuito ‘The Slayer’ Garcia is on top of the world. He’s successful. He’s wealthy. He’s a champion MMA fighter surrounded by friends who support him, but they don’t know what he was before he came to Garnet.

A gangster.
A thief.
An addict.
A murderer.

Now his past is churning up demons he can’t ignore. Chuito knows he needs to go back to Miami to end it, but there’s something holding him back, a single temptation he can’t resist before leaving.

Alaine.

She’s the one drug he can’t give up…even if it destroys them both.

Review

There are some books you read that captivate from the first scene. Usually, for me, these come from authors whose work I have gone back to time and again and haven’t been disappointed in the journey they lead me on. This is the case with Kele Moon’s latest novel, The Slayer.

From the first scene we meet Alaine, a strong willed, intelligent woman who does her best to please the men in her life–the father who disapproves of nearly every choice she’s made and that broken, brooding neighbor of hers who she has loved for five years–Chuito.

Alaine and Chu couldn’t be more different. Their individual cultures, their lifestyles, even their language and assumptions about each other contrast their realities. But what they do share is a blinding, consuming love for each other. Chu just doesn’t want to touch her. At all. Ever.

That would be too much of a temptation.

That changes with scene one and what happens between the two of them sends Alaine to a frustrating, uncontrollable need to have her man once and for all. But Chu is a devil. He’s done things that he knows he can never be forgiven for. To him, Alaine is an addiction, a beautiful angel that he has no business touching.

“To me you’re coke. Fine. Smooth. Perfectly white. Very bad for me, but so fucking sexy I don’t give a shit. It’s worth going down for.”

But The Slayer is about so much more than Alaine and Chu fighting for each other. It’s about loyalty and revenge. It’s about characters wanting what they can’t have and then, eventually, not caring whose life is altered to get what they want.

Like all of Kele’s books, the heart of the story comes from the intricate complications she levels on her characters and that indelible, defiant way those characters weave through and overcome those conflicts.

There is love and laughter, a catalog of unforgettable characters that will leave you laughing, cringing and, ultimately, cheering for a pair that doesn’t make sense on paper, but who absolutely deserve each other and that beautiful happily ever after they want.

This book had me compelled from the first chapter. I wanted to know what happened next, how Alaine and Chu would find a way to make sense to each other and I couldn’t wait to read more. But that is typically the case when I read Kele’s addictive novels. I am never disappointed in them and often consumed by her characters, her plot and the magical way she manages to help me escape into the beautiful worlds she creates. The Slayer is definitely going on my “All Time Favorite Romantic Reads” list.

If you love suspense with a side of smoking hot erotic romance then The Slayer is for you.

Highly recommended.

Five Questions with Kele Moon

What inspired the Untamed Hearts series? Did you always know that the other fighters and their friends would have their own series?

I would say fairly early on I knew I wanted to make them their own series. Chuito, Tino and Nova all popped up in Star Crossed and right from there I knew I wanted all three of them to have their own books. It was a big debate to give them their own series instead of just keep writing them under Battered Hearts but their arc is so different from the three Battered Hearts I really strongly felt that the series needed to stand on it’s own.

You are very, very informed in terms of the slang, language and interworkings of the criminal element in these novels. How did you research for this novel?

In lots of various ways. I have people who help me with the different languages. I have people who help me with the different locations (New York, Miami, Puerto Rico, etc. . . ) Essentially I just have lots and lots of help. Most of it, honestly, comes from direct one on one help. I make sure that whatever I’m representing in the book has someone in the creation process who can advise me and read to make sure it’s being done as correctly as possible. I have friends in law enforcement who help me with different crime things. I will confess to spending an obsessive amount of time researching mafia and gang related things. So much so, I’m thinking I need to write another mafia series after this one to use all the knowledge I’ve gathered. LOL!

You once told me that Chu had to see Alaine fall in order for them to move forward as a couple. What would have happened if Alaine hadn’t bought that ticket to hell? Would Chu have ever touched her?

I really, from the beginning, wanted Alaine to fall in this series. So often we see the heroine saving the anti-hero from his life of crime, danger, etc . . . I wanted to write a story where it was actually the other way around and he pulled her in. I’m not sure if he would’ve touched her or not, but I think, in a way, she had to meet him somewhere in the middle in order for them to be together. They were just too far apart otherwise, no matter how deeply they loved each other.

Tell me one lie and one truth about the rest of the series.

Nova’s book will be next after Tino’s.

Nova will end up with an older woman in that book. (So people will kill me over both of those, we’ll just let them figure out which one is true and which one isn’t)

What’s up next for you? What projects are on the horizon?

Writing Untamed Hearts. Without my permission, two more characters INSISTED on having books in the series and married their story lines in deeply with the overall arc of the series. . . The joys of being a pantser. Oh well, at least I got at least four more books to use all that mafia knowledge on!

Excerpt

“I’m an addict. You know that. Getting off the drugs has never changed that. If I—”

He swallowed hard, and his voice was still full of pain. “I just can’t. I shouldn’t even touch you.”

“You drink,” she pointed out. “You’re not addicted to that.”

“Alcohol is not my drug of choice. It’s the exact opposite of it.”

“I’m not cocaine,” she reminded him.

“That’s what you think?” He glanced at her over his shoulder, his dark gaze running over her for one long, hot moment until it stopped to rest on the pink lace of her bra.

“To me you’re coke. Fine. Smooth. Perfectly white. Very bad for me, but so fucking sexy I don’t give a shit. It’s worth going down for.”

Kele MoonA freckle faced, redhead born and raised in Hawaii, Kele Moon has always been a bit of a sore thumb and has come to enjoy the novelty of it. She thrives off pushing the envelope and finding ways to make the impossible work in her story telling. With a mad passion for romance, she adores the art of falling in love. The only rules she believes in is that, in love there are no rules and true love knows no bounds.

So obsessed is she with the beauty of romance and the novelty of creating it she’s lost in her own wonder world most of the time. Thankfully she married her own dark, handsome, brooding hero who had infinite patience for her airy ways and attempts to keep her grounded. When she leaves her keys in the refrigerator or her cell phone in the oven he’s usually there to save her from herself. The two of them now reside in Florida with their three beautiful children who make their lives both fun and challenging in equal parts–They wouldn’t have it any other way.
