RIP Maya Angelou

by Tee Tate

Our prayers and thoughts are with the family and friends of Dr. Maya maya_mainAngelou who passed away at her Winston-Salem home this morning.

A poet, dancer, actor and educator, Angelou had been battling health issues and recently canceled an appearance at the 2014 MLB Beacon Award Luncheon on May 30 in Houston where she was meant to be honored with the “Beacon of Life Award.”

Angelou’s autobiography I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is the most highly acclaimed of Angelou’s autobiographies.

The last Tweet Angelou sent is profoundly haunting:

Update from the Maya Angelou Facebook Page:

Statement from Dr. Maya Angelou’s Family:
Dr. Maya Angelou passed quietly in her home before 8:00 a.m. EST. Her family is extremely grateful that her ascension was not belabored by a loss of acuity or comprehension. She lived a life as a teacher, activist, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace. The family is extremely appreciative of the time we had with her and we know that she is looking down upon us with love.
