On this day, April 20, in 1939, Peter Beagle was born in Manhattan. Although he wrote over three dozen books, three anthologies, multiple nonfiction magazine articles, numerous short stories and eight produced screenplays (including Ralph Bakshi’s 1978 animated version of The Lord of the Rings), and although he has won a Hugo Award, a Nebula Award, multiple Locus and Mythopoeic Fantasy Awards, and in 2011 was given the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, he will be forever endeared to
fantasy fans as the man who wrote The Last Unicorn. (Published in 1968, it has sold over 5 million copies and has been translated into over 25 languages.) Now residing in California – and still writing – today Mr. Beagle turns 79.
